Buying an RV might not be cheaper than other vacations. If you could only use the RV a couple times of year does owning one make sense for your family. I took some figures and used some old fashion math to prove my point. Let us know if it's worth it for your family.
Scenario 1:
- Travel Trailer cost: $22,900 financed for 6 years @ 4.5%: $363 per month/total: $26,136
- Insurance is: $40 per month is total $480 per year. Total of $2880 for 6 years
- Average of $2000 startup cost for hitch and other camper stuff
- Tag for $225 per year. Total of $1350 for 6 years
- Total spent for 6 year period for Trailer, Insurance, Start up and Tag: $32,366
- Per month cost for 6 years: $449
- Per year cost for 6 years: $5,388
Scenario 2:
- Class A cost: $90,000 financed for 10 years @ 5.5%: $976 per month/total: $117,120
- Insurance is: $130 per month is $1560 per year. Total of $15,600 for 10 years
- Startup cost is $2000
- Tag is $400 per year: $4000
- Total spent for 10 year period: $138,720
- Per month cost for 10 year: $1,156
- Per year cost for 10 years: $13,872
